Former ballerina and stage actress extraordinaire, Sveinbjorg Alexanders' incredible career in ballet, theatre and choreography started at the age of five. Born and raised in Iceland, Sven's first dance performance was at the National Theatre of Iceland in Reykjavik. She thrilled at the magic, joy and divine bliss dance performance gave her and she never looked back!
Sven studied and was trained in the Bournonville Technique at the National Theatre of Iceland. She went on to receive her teachers certificate at the Royal Academy of Dancing at the Royal Ballet School in London. Sven also received her Vaganova Teaching Certificate at the School of Hartford Ballet and the Benesh Dance Notation Certificate at the Royal Ballet School in London.
After completing her studies in London, Sven auditioned
for the Stuttgart Ballet Company and was immediately hired. From
feature dancer, she soon became a soloist with the company. Shortly
thereafter, Sven became a Principal Dancer with the Tanz-Forum
Ballet, Cologne Opera House in Germany.
Sven performed countless principal roles in both
classical and contemporary ballets, starring in many international tours
throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada and South America. She
performed in virtually every major opera house in the world including,
New York, Paris, London, Rome, Athens, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Cairo, New
Delhi, Hong Kong and Rio de Janeiro.
Sven worked with many of the
world's greatest and considered iconic choreographers: George
Balanchine, Sir Kenneth McMillian, John Cranko, Glen Telley, Hans
van Manen, Christopher Bruce, Gray Veredon, John Neumeier, Helmut
Bauman, Jurg Burth, Jochen Ulrich and Kurt Joos.
As choreographer, Sven worked with Joffrey Ballet Principal Dancers in staging her original version of Carmen. Sven choreographed for opera, television, plays and musicals including Eugene Onegin and Cinderella for the Opera House of Cologne. She also choreographed and staged The History of Rock and Roll for the Rotterdam Theatre in the Netherlands.
Sven produced and directed productions at the National Theatre of Iceland and staged several ballets including Paquita, Raymonda, Las Sylphides and Swan Lake. In rounding out her career, Sven served as Stage Manager at the Opera House of Cologne. Sven also had the unique opportunity to work as a stage actress in Europe. Title roles included The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (Tennessee Williams); Orpheus (Jean Coctau) and India Song (Margurite Duras).
Sven
was an invited Guest Instructor for the Colorada Ballet, Atlanta
Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Theatre of West Berlin, University of
Munich and a visiting professor at the University of South
Florida. She was a member of the faculty at the School of
Hartford Ballet and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School. She also
taught Modern Technique (Martha Graham) at the University of
Munich and the John Cranko School of Stuttgart. Sven also served
on juries for international dance competitions in Luxemburg.
Sven
was Ballet Master at the Mannheim Ballet, Opera House of Cologne and
eventually found herself in Las Vegas, where she was appointed
Ballet Master and Academy Principal for the Nevada Ballet Theatre.
Sven's
varied and long career has evolved through the years and most recently
she joined Piccolo Productions as producer and ballet consultant for our
full length motion picture fantasy ballet, Veneration of the Holy Mother. It is our great pleasure and great good fortune to have Sven as a member of our team.
